COWANE'S HOSPITAL (GUILDHALL)

Built in 1637-49 with funds bequeathed by John Cowane, a wealthy Stirling merchant, originally to offer charity to merchants or “guildbreithers” who had fallen on hard times.  Later it was used as a school, cholera hospital and in more recent times as a public venue.  On the terrace, overlooking Scotland ’s oldest Bowling Green (presently out of use) may be seen two large Russian cannon captured in the Crimea .
